Today, every workplace is looking for the best way to reduce their impact on the environment. Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are bought every minute, and with about half of all plastics produced being designed to be used only once, we produce around 300 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, which is nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. If this trend continues, there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050.
So how can we stop this? At Thirsty Work, as detailed in our environmental policy, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment as much as possible. To achieve this, in early 2018 we replaced our mainly plastic range of cups with new recyclable and biodegradable paper alternatives.
While our previous plastic cups were fully recyclable, we were conscious that only about 9% of all plastic waste that has ever been produced have been recycled. About 12% has been incinerated and the rest - a whopping 79% - has accumulated in landfills, dumps or the natural environment. With this in mind, we wanted to introduce a range of recyclable and biodegradable cups that would help encourage our customers to re-use and recycle, to minimise how much plastic finds its way into the natural environment.
By switching to paper cups, at Thirsty Work we have already successfully managed to significantly reduce our plastic usage, and in our continuing efforts we aim to reach a 95% reduction in 2020. Our new paper cups are all fully recyclable and biodegradable, and made from natural substances – our coatings are derived from corn rather than petroleum – meaning that we can now switch to a renewable resource to create our cups.
With a range of paper cups suitable for both hot and cold drinks, switching couldn’t be easier. Our cold cups include our 9oz cups, perfect for offices, and our 4oz cones, a great option for gyms and construction sites. Our hot cups include our single-walled, 7oz cups as well as our double-walled 12oz, both great options for any workplace.
