Having a convenient source of pure-filtered water around the office or home is a great way to help people stay productive and hydrated. But whether you like an ice-cold thirst quencher to keep you refreshed or need easy access to hot water on demand for tea and coffee rounds, you’ll be using energy. So should you be turning your water dispenser off at night to save electricity?

But one thing water dispensers have in common is that both the heating and cooling elements of each water dispenser need a constant supply of electricity to keep the water ice cold or steaming hot. While each unit is designed to be left switched on 24/7 if you want them to be, it’s not energy-efficient to do so. To help you save money, you should switch the dispenser off at night to save electricity.

How much do you spend?

One of our standard bottled water coolers can consume 74W (0.074kW) of electricity for chilled water. Based on being switched on for 8 hours a day, 5-days a week (160 hours over a 4-week month), it will use 11.8kWh of electricity. Based on the current average UK rate of 18.9p/kWh (2021 prices) that’s around £223 – or just over 10p per day.

And one of our best-selling counter-top hot water dispensers can give you an uninterrupted supply of 96ºC hot water on demand, capable of providing up to 28 litres of hot water per hour for a team of 10. Once brought up to temperature, the water will stay hot when it’s using standby power, so it only uses 0.066 kW per hour which, using the same metrics, can be around 16p a day.

You can see by these costs that every water dispenser is as energy-efficient as possible for you. But if your office is open on a standard 5-day, 9-5 week, it’s well worth switching your water dispensers off at night to save even more electricity. Even when electricity costs less overnight, you’d be using energy when no one’s around, so it’s a good way to lower your carbon footprint and save money.
