As the most plentiful element available, hydrogen is already used in various industries, from health and energy to power and automotive. But one of the latest trends is all about hydrogen water. Some claim it can enhance athletic performance, reduce inflammation, and even slow ageing, while others suggest it’s simply the next health fad. So, which is it?
Hydrogen-rich water is just regular water with added hydrogen gas. The hydrogen can be pre-added and sold as pre-packaged hydrogen water, quickly bought in-store or online. But because the raw ingredient is just plain, regular water, you can also make it yourself by dissolving effervescent hydrogen tablets.
While new products are sold as health or sports drinks, the water's claimed potential benefits lie in molecular hydrogen's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But it’s also claimed it can increase energy, improve muscle recovery after sport or exercise, improve liver function, and even slow ageing.
Some research says that molecular hydrogen can neutralise some of the body’s most negative free radical molecules without reducing beneficial positive oxygen molecules. This targeting of damaging molecules is supposed to make hydrogen water a superior antioxidant. But beyond any potential day-to-day health benefits, hydrogen water is supposed to be even more beneficial in two key areas: sports and exercise and anti-inflammatory health.
Hydrogen water is thought to help reduce exercise-induced muscle stress and inflammation, potentially leading to quicker recovery times and improved athletic performance. Beyond sports, hydrogen water is also believed to be rich in anti-inflammatory properties and could be used for various health issues. Inflammation is linked to diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.
But, we should note that scientific confirmation of these benefits has yet to be established, and further research is needed to confirm these claims.
While there may be some truth in the potential benefits of hydrogen water, the scientific community remains cautious. The antioxidant properties of molecular hydrogen are interesting, but more extensive research is needed to confirm whether hard scientific facts back its potential advantages.
So should you try it? While it’s definitely safe to drink as a supplement, it shouldn’t considered as a miracle cure or a replacement for ongoing medical treatment. But why not try it to see if it makes a difference to you?
The key to all healthy living is to stay hydrated. Whether you drink hydrogen water or regular water, just make it a healthy habit. And if you want to try hydrogen tablets in your water, why not add them to the pure filtered water from a Thirsty Work bottled water cooler or mains-fed water cooler?
