3 Easy Tips To More Sustainable Hydration

By Matt Stimpson |  Published

With drinking water becoming a slowly decreasing natural resource and the ever-increasing use of single-use plastics, it might seem difficult to stay optimistic on these particular environmental issues. But small steps and positive action by all of us can make a difference. And, by combining two of the biggest issues of our time, here are three tips to enjoy more sustainable hydration.

Steps to sustainable hydration

The phrase ‘don’t waste water’ has been well used for many decades. From primary school upwards, stickers, posters, and awareness campaigns have pushed the message that water is precious. We all need it to survive, after all. But, in comparison, the single-use plastic issue has only hit the public consciousness relatively recently.

With around 12 million tons of plastic entering oceans around the world every year, much of which is single-use, the effects are damaging and long-term. The best way to avoid these plastics is to use an alternative for a sustainable way to encourage hydration throughout the day. So here are 3 ways to help you save water, reuse, refill, and cut single-use plastics combined:

1. Reusable water bottles: Out & About

Reusable water bottles are big business and a perfect way to eliminate reliance on single-use plastic water bottles. Perfect for taking with you to work, exercising, or anywhere out and about, a reusable and refillable water bottle ensures you get the water you need without wasting plastic.

Often made from recycled plastics or stainless-steel, reusable bottles are tough, durable, sturdy, and stylish. And they cater to almost every age and gender as well. Kids and adults are all represented with different bottle sizes, capacities, colours, and different activities. While they should easily last a good few years of use, they’re also easy to keep clean and hygienic.

Average prices come in at around £10 to £30, but can go higher, especially if you’re looking for specialist hydration packs for cycling or hiking.

2. Reusable water bottles: At Home

When you’re at home, it’s easy to turn on the tap and get water whenever you need it. But you can fall into the trap of turning the tap on full and letting the water run as cold as possible before filling up. But doing both these things wastes litres of water each time, and that costs you money and sees good water go down the drain.

By investing in a classic glass water bottle, you can fill it before storing it in the fridge to chill, for beautifully crisp, fresh water. And, as it’s glass, the bottle isn’t affected by any kind of ‘flavour’ which you might taste on plastic bottles, giving you an altogether purer taste. Plus, a glass bottle is also made from natural materials and easy to keep clean and sanitised. As long as it doesn’t get broken, it could last you years.

3. Reusable water bottles: At Work

One of the best methods of sustainable hydration at work is to make full use of a workplace water cooler. The best friend of many office, warehouse, or factory, a mains fed water cooler or bottled water cooler gives staff cost-effective, energy-efficient, and fully-filtered water on tap – with no waste.

And, while everyone has a choice to use eco-friendly paper cups, there’s a real encouragement for staff and visitors to use reusable water bottles each time they refill. Some businesses even give their staff company branded water bottles to encourage them to drink more – and give them a bit of free PR when they’re used out and about.

Office-based teams can also use the water cooler to refill those stylish glass bottles and keep the whole team refreshed, for sustainable hydration all day.
